Orange County is facing a growing opiate and heroin epidemic
Like the rest of the nation, Orange County has seen an increase in the number of emergency room (ER) visits, hospitalizations, and deaths due to opioid abuse and dependence. The publication, “Opioid Overdose and Death in Orange County,” reveals the alarming statistics of these trends.
ER Visits/Hospitalizations – In Orange County, during the 10-year period from 2005 to 2015, ER visits for opioid-related issues increased 141%. During this same time period there was also a 9% increase in the rate of hospitalizations due to opioid overdoses. Between 2011 and 2015, the incidence of opioid-related ER visits was the result of opioid abuse or dependence (24%), heroin poisoning (24%), and natural and/or semi-synthetic opioid poisoning (21%). The other 15% of the visits were due to opium poisoning (11%) and methadone poisoning (4%).
Demographics – Of these ER visits, approximately 61% of the patients were male, and 39% were female; furthermore, between 2011 and 2015, the percentage of visits for males increased 54% and for females the increase was 48%. Non-Hispanic whites accounted for 78% of the visits, with Hispanics at 15%. Just over half of the patients were between the ages of 18 to 34 (53%), with all age groups seeing an increase in visits except for adolescents between the ages of 10 to 17.
Deaths – Opioid use, both illicit and/or prescription, accounted for 70% of all overdose deaths in Orange County between 2011 and 2015. Shockingly, 81% of these deaths were categorized as accidental. Of the deceased, 62% were male; moreover, non-Hispanic whites accounted for 81% of the deaths, with Hispanics at 14%, Asian/Pacific Islander at 3%, and African-American accounting for 1% of the deaths. Forty-five percent (45%) of the deaths were adults between the ages of 45 and 64, with the highest death rate being adults ages 45-54. Over half (55%) of the deaths were due to a prescription overdose, with 26% being attributed to a mixture of opioids or taking opioids with alcohol, with heroin and other illicit opioids accounting for the remaining deaths (19%).
